The elements of a poem video

1. The video does not require anything. It only attempts to spark the learners curiosity about the subject. It shares part of a thought provoking poem at the end of the video and then calls the learner to research the poem and continue reading it. It would also be very easy to quiz the learners after watching the video on the new words and terms that it introduced.

3. After watching the video I can tell the learner to follow what the video suggests and to read the entire poem out loud. After reading it they should write a couple paragraphs on how they interpret the poem. This would help develop the learners ability to interpret poems and show what they have taken away from the video. Another activity would be have a Socratic seminar about the poem. This improves the learners ability to interpret poems and also gives them outside motivation to do the work so that they can contribute to the group. If the entire course is taking place online then the Socratic seminar could take place over zoom or teams.

4. For the activity where the learner has to write out their interpretation of the poem they could do it either through a blog post or by emailing it to the teacher. They would then receive feedback through a comment on the post or a reply to their email. For the Socratic seminar feedback is given almost immediately at the end of the activity, it can be given by either the teacher or other students.

5. The amount of work for the teacher is manageable. With a smaller group you can use the written interpretation, because the interpretation is only a couple paragraphs it would not take long to read through each submission. As the size of the group increases you can then transition to the Socratic seminar activity. The seminar is even easier on the teacher as all you have to do is moderate the discussion to make sure it stays on topic. Once the seminar is complete there is nothing more for the teacher to do.

  1. Hi Kyle, I enjoyed reading about the techniques suggested in the video and how they can be employed in the learning resource. I liked your idea of having a Socratic seminar, since it would increase student interaction and lessen the teacher’s load for larger class sizes. I think it would be a valuable interaction for the students!
